The Monster Squad

Tomorrow evening, Easter Sunday, I’ll be attending an Alamo Drafthouse special viewing of the 80’s cult classic The Monster Squad. Film director Fred Dekker will be attending the event with a few of the actors from the movie. I haven’t seen this movie in years, but I remember vividly enjoying it for the first time back in 1987 (I was 7 years old at that time living in Midland, TX.)

The effects (and dialogue for that matter) are pretty outdated now, but the monster makeup is classically cartoonish and overall just plain fun! The movie is overrun with memorable one-liners, i.e. Horace’s/Fat Kid’s classic line, “Wolfman's got nards!”

Other scenes were quite fun and memorable, especially to a kid watching this back in the 80’s. The montage where the Monster Squad prepares to do battle by sharpening stakes, making silver bullets, and developing nude pictures of Patrick’s sister was pretty cool when I was a kid, and I’m sure it’ll have the same effect today.

The acting isn’t bad at all, just a bit remedial which makes it a true cult classic example of an 80’s monster-movie that took nothing too seriously. Overall, I’d call it a fun B-movie which carries on the tradition of the old monster movies of the 50’s! I’m still anxiously waiting for it to be released on DVD!

For those of you who have seen and enjoyed this movie, I have a special treat for you! I give you the cheesy funny Monster Squad theme song played during the end credits!

If the actors were child stars when you were a child yourself, then will invariably be about the same age as you are now...

Your challenge is to end up in bed with at least one of them! :D
